Meet the Peruvian Inca Orchid (aka Peruvian Hairless)
The Peruvian Inca Orchid Dog (PIO) is also known as the Perro sin pelo del Perú (dog without hair of Peru) or the Peruvian Hairless Dog(PHD). A popular story tells how the Incan nobility prized the light colored Inca Orchid dogs and kept them inside in orchid filled rooms during the day to protect them from the sun. At night, the dogs were allowed to run under the light of the moon... the moonflower dogs...
Peruvian Hairless Dog's origins are obscure, but it's believed that they have been around since AD 750. Although the Peruvian Hairless has a long history, the breed wasn't recognized in its native county until the early 1980's. In 2001, the Peruvian government elevated the Peruvian Hairless Dog to national heritage status.
